Inspiring heroes, celebrating legacies
Salute started as a way to tell the stories that connect, inspire, and uplift our local military community. Our aim is to be a valuable resource to those who have sacrificed so much, at no cost to them.
Salute is a monthly publication dedicated to celebrating the lives and contributions of our active military members, veterans, and their families. Rooted in the belief that every service member’s story deserves to be heard, Salute highlights the unique experiences, achievements, and sacrifices of those who have bravely served our country. Each article is community-nominated, ensuring that our content reflects the heart and soul of those we honor.
Beyond storytelling, Salute is committed to providing essential resources and support to our military community. Our pages are filled with valuable information, from veteran-friendly businesses to critical services, designed to help our heroes thrive. Supported by local businesses and fueled by the passion of our readers, Salute is a bridge that connects, empowers, and celebrates the people who protect our freedoms.

JODIE FRANKL
Publisher, salute WESTERN NORTH DAKOTA
This magazine was born out of my passion for serving others, the love for my fellow veterans and the desire to share their stories and memorialize the history of our North Dakota service members, and the sacrifices of their families.
I am a Veteran myself, after serving 9 years in the Army National Guard with a tour in Iraq as a heavy equipment operator. My husband is also a Veteran, still actively serving in the Air National Guard, so I've been on the "spouse" side of the military as well. Together, we serve our community through our local American Legion where we both hold officer positions.
Over the last couple of years, I've had the opportunity to get to know some of our local Veterans on a much deeper level, and it's truly been an honor to hear their stories, and share their experiences.
"I've never told anyone that story...not even my wife", is the sentiment I heard from a Vietnam Veteran that I was visiting with after interviewing him for a video series I was working on. At which point, I quickly learned that what he was willing to say on-camera, vs. what he confided in me when it was just us was a completely different experience. One that was forged, admittedly, through what I can only express as trauma-bonding together over our war stories, where safety and trust was built from that deep, unspoken connection.
Though we're generations apart, in that moment there was no gap, no sense of time, no barriers between us. Instead, it was simply two Veterans unknowingly creating a new bond and a safe place for each other to expose parts of ourselves that had been deeply suppressed for years, until that very moment when I believe we both inadvertently found safety and healing, together
THIS is why I desire to publish a Veterans magazine for Western North Dakota (with Eastern to soon follow). Please join me on this journey in honoring our heroes, one story at at time...
